Our history
We may have taken our current shape in 2017, but our story stretches back more than 40 years. Before Schulman IRB and Chesapeake IRB came together to form Advarra, both organizations were known for their rigor, independence, and unwavering commitment to ethical oversight. Their shared values and competencies—regulatory expertise, trusted service, operational excellence, and a forward-looking approach to technology—became our North Star as we expanded through acquisitions, partnerships, and strategic innovations.
We brought together the market-leading CTMSs for research sites and institutions. We built technology that redefined how sponsors and CROs collaborate and communicate with sites. And we introduced Braid, our data and AI platform, unlocking deeper operational insights to guide the protocol lifecycle.
Today, we’re defined by where we started and where we’re headed: pairing decades of IRB experience with advanced intelligence and integrated solutions that provide transparency for all stakeholders. It’s how we’ve become a comprehensive partner to the entire research ecosystem—supporting study teams as they pursue clinical advancement with confidence, integrity, and care.
The principles we live by

The scale of our impact
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I)
At Advarra
We believe in fostering a work environment where employees feel comfortable in bringing their authentic selves to work, irrespective of any personal characteristics including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, veteran status, or disability (physical or mental). We value diversity in every form and strive for all Advarra team members to have a voice, experience a sense of belonging, and feel valued and respected.
Across our industry
We believe addressing underrepresented populations in clinical trials is a shared responsibility, requiring a multi-pronged effort across the industry. We consistently seek meaningful ways to assist our clients in solving the challenge of increasing participation of underrepresented populations in clinical trials through our products and services. We also regularly partner with thought leaders in the industry to focus on critical issues in DE&I within clinical research, as well as ideate possible solutions.
