Specialized Programs of Research Excellence

Abbreviation: SPOREs

Definition

Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs) are NCI-funded initiatives designed to accelerate translational cancer research from discovery to patient impact.

SPOREs support multidisciplinary teams that integrate basic science, clinical research, and population studies to move interventions toward clinical testing. Many SPORE programs include shared resources, biostatistics, biospecimen infrastructure, and pilot funding that enable trial development. SPORE-supported research often strengthens biomarker-driven studies and early proof-of-concept work. Participation can expand trial capacity, collaboration networks, and access to specialized expertise.
